Subaru Exhaust Upgrades in Kansas City
American Fusion Wheels is the Kansas City metro's specialist for Subaru exhaust upgrades. We install catback systems, J-pipes, downpipes, headers, and complete turbo-back kits on every modern Subaru performance platform — WRX (VB chassis 2022+ with FA24DIT, VA chassis 2015-2021 with FA20DIT), STI (EJ257), and BRZ/GR86 (FA24 NA). Our shop in Shawnee, KS stocks and installs exhaust systems from every major brand the Subaru community trusts.
A properly chosen exhaust system is the most transformative modification you can make to a Subaru. It defines the car's character — from a refined, deep cruiser to a raw, aggressive rally machine. We help you choose the right combination of components for your sound preference, power goals, and daily driving needs.
Invidia Exhaust Systems — Invidia is the most popular exhaust brand in the Subaru community, and for good reason. The Q300 delivers a quiet, refined tone with deep bass — perfect for daily drivers who want improvement without excess noise. The R400 is the sweet spot — aggressive under boost with a deep idle rumble and minimal highway drone. The N1 is raw and loud — a straight-through design for maximum volume and flow. The Gemini series offers a quad-tip dual-exit design with excellent sound. All Invidia catback systems are available in stainless steel with titanium or stainless tips and are a true bolt-on installation on WRX and STI.
Tomei Exhaust Systems — The Tomei Expreme Ti is the gold standard for Subaru exhaust. Made from titanium for significant weight savings (as much as 15 pounds lighter than stainless alternatives), the Expreme Ti produces a raw, aggressive tone that is distinctly Subaru. The single-exit design on the STI version is iconic in the Subaru community. Tomei also makes quality headers, over-pipes, and front pipes for both turbo and NA Subaru platforms.
Grimmspeed & Cobb — Grimmspeed J-pipes and downpipes are engineered specifically for the Subaru platform with precision fitment and quality construction. Their catted J-pipe for the FA24 WRX is one of the best-fitting options on the market. Cobb downpipes and exhaust components integrate seamlessly with the Cobb AccessPort tuning ecosystem — proper OTS maps are available for most Cobb exhaust components, making tuning straightforward.
Nameless Performance — Nameless is a Subaru-focused exhaust manufacturer based in the Pacific Northwest. They offer fully customizable catback systems with your choice of muffler delete, 4-inch muffler, or 5-inch muffler — so you can dial in the exact volume and tone you want. Their axleback and catback options for WRX and STI are a great value with excellent sound quality. Nameless also makes muffler deletes for owners who want maximum volume on a budget.
AWE & Borla — AWE Tuning brings their precision engineering from European car exhaust to the Subaru platform. Their Track and Touring catback systems for the WRX and BRZ offer excellent sound quality with premium construction. Borla is a respected American exhaust manufacturer with ATAK, S-Type, and Touring options for WRX and BRZ — stainless steel construction with a million-mile warranty.
J-Pipes & Downpipes — The J-pipe (FA24 WRX) or downpipe (EJ257 STI) is the single most impactful exhaust upgrade for turbo Subarus. Replacing the restrictive factory unit with a high-flow catted or catless unit dramatically improves turbo spool, mid-range power, and exhaust volume. A catted J-pipe on the FA24 WRX with an Invidia R400 catback and Cobb AccessPort protune is the definitive Stage 2 setup — 300+ WHP with a refined, aggressive sound. We always recommend catted options for daily-driven vehicles to avoid emissions issues.
Headers — Unequal-length (UEL) headers are the secret to the classic Subaru boxer rumble. Modern WRX and STI models use equal-length headers from the factory for maximum efficiency, but UEL headers restore the iconic burbling idle and crackling overrun sound. On the BRZ and GR86, UEL headers from Tomei and ACE add tremendous character to the NA FA24 sound. Equal-length headers are available for owners who prioritize peak power output over sound character.

Why Choose American Fusion Wheels for Subaru Exhaust Kansas City
Professional service, quality parts, and expert installation — all under one roof in Shawnee, KS.
WRX FA24 Exhaust
Performance exhaust systems for the 2022+ WRX (VB chassis) with the FA24DIT turbo engine. Catback, J-pipe, and turbo-back systems from Invidia (R400, Q300, Gemini), Grimmspeed, Cobb, Nameless, AWE, and Borla. The FA24 responds exceptionally well to exhaust modifications — deeper tone and improved turbo spool with every upgrade level.
STI EJ25 Exhaust
Exhaust upgrades for the 2015-2021 STI with the legendary EJ257 turbocharged boxer engine. Turbo-back systems, catback kits, downpipes, and unequal-length headers from Tomei (Expreme Ti), Invidia (N1, R400, Q300), Grimmspeed, Cobb, and Borla. The EJ platform is famous for its deep boxer rumble — our exhaust choices maximize that signature sound.
BRZ/86 Exhaust
Naturally aspirated FA24 exhaust upgrades for the 2022+ BRZ and GR86. Headers, catback systems, and over-pipe setups from Tomei, Invidia, HKS, Borla, and AWE. The NA FA24 loves to rev and sounds incredible with a quality header and catback combination. UEL headers add that classic boxer rumble to the flat-four soundtrack.
Downpipes & J-Pipes
The J-pipe (WRX) and downpipe (STI) are the single biggest exhaust upgrades for turbo Subarus. Catted and catless options from Grimmspeed, Invidia, Cobb, and Tomei. A quality J-pipe on the FA24 WRX dramatically improves turbo spool and adds 15 to 30 WHP with a proper tune. The STI downpipe opens up the EJ257's mid-range power significantly.
Headers (UEL Rumble!)
Unequal-length (UEL) headers bring back the classic Subaru boxer rumble on both turbo and NA platforms. Equal-length (EL) headers maximize flow and power. Tomei, Borla, and ACE header options for EJ and FA platforms. UEL headers on the BRZ and older WRX create the iconic burble and pop that Subaru enthusiasts love.
Catback Systems
Complete catback exhaust systems are the most popular starting point for WRX and STI owners. No tune required for catback-only installs. Single exit, dual exit, quad tip, and resonated or non-resonated options. Invidia Q300 (quiet and refined), R400 (aggressive with resonance), N1 (raw and loud), Tomei Expreme Ti (lightweight titanium), and Nameless (customizable muffler deletes and resonators).

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about subaru exhaust kansas city at American Fusion Wheels.
What is the difference between the Invidia Q300, R400, and N1?
The Invidia Q300 is the quietest of the three — it uses a large resonator and muffler for a deep, refined tone that is comfortable for daily driving with minimal drone. The R400 is louder and more aggressive with a mid-level resonator — it produces a deep rumble at idle and a strong pull under boost. The N1 is the loudest option — a straight-through muffler design that delivers a raw, raspy boxer sound. All three are available in stainless steel with titanium or stainless tips. For daily drivers we typically recommend the R400 as the best balance of sound and livability. The N1 is best for track cars or owners who want maximum volume.
Do UEL headers really bring back the Subaru rumble?
Yes. The classic Subaru boxer rumble comes from unequal-length (UEL) exhaust headers. Modern WRX and STI models use equal-length headers from the factory, which produce a smoother but less distinctive sound. Installing UEL headers on the EJ platform (STI, older WRX) or the FA platform (BRZ, GR86) restores that deep, burbling idle and crackling overrun sound that Subarus are famous for. The trade-off is a small amount of peak power compared to equal-length headers, but most street drivers prefer the character and sound of UEL headers. Tomei and ACE make quality UEL header options for most Subaru platforms.
What does the FA24 WRX sound like with an exhaust?
The FA24DIT in the 2022+ WRX has a different sound character than the older EJ engines. It produces a deeper, smoother tone with less of the traditional boxer rumble. With a quality catback like the Invidia R400, the FA24 WRX delivers a refined, low-frequency growl at idle and a strong, turbocharged pull under boost. Adding a J-pipe to the catback brings more turbo spool noise, louder volume, and a more aggressive mid-range bark. The FA24 will never sound exactly like an EJ-powered STI, but it has its own distinct character that many WRX owners come to prefer — clean, deep, and powerful.
Are catless exhaust parts emissions legal?
Catless J-pipes, downpipes, and headers remove the catalytic converter and are not legal for use on public roads in most states. Kansas and Missouri both require vehicles to pass emissions testing in certain counties (Johnson County KS and Jackson County MO included). A catless setup will cause a check engine light (CEL) and will fail emissions inspection. Catted (high-flow catalytic converter) alternatives from Grimmspeed, Invidia, and Cobb are available for every Subaru platform — they provide 80 to 90 percent of the flow and sound improvement while keeping the catalytic converter intact. We always recommend catted options for daily-driven vehicles.
How much horsepower does a Subaru exhaust add?
A catback exhaust alone adds 5 to 15 WHP on a turbo WRX or STI — mostly at the top of the rev range. The real gains come from adding a J-pipe or downpipe. A catted J-pipe plus catback on the FA24 WRX adds 25 to 40 WHP with a proper Cobb AccessPort protune. A turbo-back exhaust on the EJ257 STI adds 30 to 50 WHP with a protune. On the naturally aspirated BRZ and GR86, a header and catback combination adds 10 to 20 WHP. The exhaust modifications also improve throttle response, turbo spool time, and sound — the power gains are just part of the improvement.
Should I get a catted or catless J-pipe for my WRX?
For a daily-driven WRX, we recommend a catted (high-flow catalytic converter) J-pipe. Catted J-pipes from Grimmspeed, Invidia, and Cobb deliver 80 to 90 percent of the flow improvement of a catless pipe while keeping the catalytic converter in place. This means no check engine light (with a proper tune), no emissions issues, and less exhaust smell in the cabin. Catless J-pipes produce slightly more power (5 to 10 WHP difference) and more volume, but they require a CEL fix in the tune and will not pass emissions testing. For track-only vehicles or states without emissions testing, catless is an option — but for most Kansas City WRX owners, catted is the smart choice.
How much does a Subaru exhaust system cost?
Subaru exhaust pricing depends on the components and brand. A quality catback exhaust (Invidia, Tomei, Nameless, AWE) runs $500 to $1,500 for the parts plus $200 to $400 for installation. A J-pipe or downpipe adds $400 to $1,200 for parts plus $200 to $400 for installation. A complete turbo-back system (J-pipe or downpipe plus catback) runs $1,000 to $3,000+ for parts plus installation. Headers for BRZ and GR86 range from $600 to $2,000. Premium titanium systems like the Tomei Expreme Ti cost more but save significant weight. We offer free quotes — call 913-291-2027 with your Subaru model and exhaust goals.
Will a Subaru exhaust void my warranty?
A catback exhaust by itself is very unlikely to cause any warranty issues. It does not modify the engine, turbo, or emissions systems. Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a dealer cannot void your entire warranty for installing aftermarket parts — they must prove the modification directly caused the failure. J-pipes and downpipes carry slightly more risk because they interface with the turbo and emissions systems. If a turbo failure occurs and the dealer can show the J-pipe contributed, they could deny that specific claim. We install everything to manufacturer specifications and use quality components to minimize any risk.

Open in Google Maps →"Had American Fusion Wheels install an Invidia R400 catback and Grimmspeed catted J-pipe on my 2023 WRX. The sound is absolutely perfect — deep and aggressive under boost but completely livable on my daily commute with no drone at highway speeds. They also flashed my Cobb AccessPort with the matching OTS map and everything runs clean. The whole install took about 4 hours and the fitment is factory-tight. No rattles, no leaks, and the welds on the Invidia are beautiful. They know Subarus inside and out. Already planning my next visit for coilovers and wheels."— Marcus K. 2023 Subaru WRX (VB)
