Larger tires increase the effective gear ratio because the engine has to spin more to turn a bigger circle. This makes your Jeep feel sluggish, struggle on inclines, and shift hunting on the highway. Regearing swaps the ring and pinion to a numerically higher ratio that compensates for the larger tire diameter, restoring the power delivery and shift points your Jeep had on stock tires. It is the single most impactful drivability improvement after a tire upgrade.

For a Wrangler with 35-inch tires and an automatic transmission, 4.56 gears are the most popular choice and provide a balanced blend of highway cruising and off-road pull. If you have a six-speed manual transmission, 4.88 gears may be preferable because manual Wranglers benefit from the extra mechanical advantage at lower speeds. For Rubicon models that came with 4.10 factory gears, moving to 4.56 is a moderate step, while Sport models with 3.45 gears see a dramatic improvement at 4.56.

Regearing both axles on a Wrangler or Gladiator typically costs between fifteen hundred and twenty-five hundred dollars including parts and labor, depending on the axle type and whether lockers are being installed at the same time. Dana 44 axles with a locker install are at the higher end. After installing larger tires, watch for these symptoms: the engine revs higher than normal to maintain highway speed, the transmission hunts between gears on slight inclines, acceleration from a stop feels noticeably slower, fuel economy drops significantly, and the engine feels strained at speeds above 60 mph. If your Jeep exhibits any of these behaviors after a tire upgrade, regearing will solve the problem.

On a four-wheel-drive Jeep, the front and rear axle ratios must match. If you regear only one axle, engaging four-wheel drive will cause driveline binding because the axles are spinning at different effective speeds.
